Bakery: United Bakers Dairy Restaurant
Address: 506 Lawrence Ave. W, North York ON
Website: http://unitedbakers.ca/
Style: Jewish, Eastern European
Price: $$
One of my bakery suppliers happened to park in the Lawrence plaza and spotted this busy dairy restaurant (I think that means no meat is served?) and was lured in by the name, thinking this was -- as the website also claims -- a bakery as well. He was disappointed to find that seemingly all products came pre-packaged from Bakery World, and yet people were lining up at the bakery nonetheless. Although there is mention of Eastern European pastries and baked goods on their website, it doesn't make the distinction that these are, in fact, baked by other bakeries; or what is specifically baked on-site and what isn't. Thus the name can be both deceitful (not quite a bakery) and explains everything (uniting bakeries under one roof?), but it left my Cake Tour provider confused and disappointed: in his words, "they had nothing".
Not wanting to get something explicitly from another bakery, he took one of the very few unpackaged items: the doughnut. (Yes, it's another doughnut post :D) This doughnut may or may not be made by another bakery. It was a fried jelly doughnut, Eastern European style, with a large amount of powdered sugar on top that almost formed a crust. It was slightly different than the standard Polish variety, with are probably the most predominant in GTA, and was quite good, but the experience and lack of choice left much to be desired. I would rather go to the bakery itself than purchase items through what's pretty much a middleman.
