THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE

TO THE

BEST CINNAMON BUNS

There are, in my humble opinion, three classic Canadian baked goods that can be pitted against each other so as to determine which ones come out on top: doughnuts, cinnamon buns and butter tarts. This is a guide to everyone's favourite bun: the cinnamon.

Whatever the style, here are my top picks for cinnamon buns, province by province. These include all highly recommended (3 1/2 stars or higher) bakeries, as reviewed by me. This list is not ranked and will be updated if something new needs to be added (🏆 = National Competition Level).

THE ROLLING PIN 🏆
Address: 821E 6th Ave, Hope
One of the best bakeries on the BC trip and cinnamon buns worthy of competing at the national level. The general verdict upon first bite? This bun is "effing awesome".

BOND BOND'S BAKERY
Address: 1010 Blanshard Rd, Victoria
While they have classic buns, I gave their cinnamon brioche a try: slightly flaky shell with a drizzle of icing and a chewy, buttery bottom that beat out all other baked goods in Victoria.

VIKING BAKERY
Address: 2207 Danforth Ave, Toronto
The cinnamon buns at this Icelandic bakery may not give me too many Iceland vibes, but in some ways they beat the "originals": soft and fluffy with a dab of icing on top.

SWEET TROLLEY BAKERY  🏆
Address: 3056 Dundas St W, Toronto
Make your way past the plethora of tacky signs outside advertising that these are the best cinnamon buns in town and you'll see they don't lie: these are some amazing buns!

BEACHES BAKESHOP 🏆
Address: 900 Kingston Rd, Toronto
The best -- yes, the best -- cinnamon buns in Toronto and probably this part of the country come from this quaint Swedish bakery. You haven't tried cinnamon buns until you've had these ones!

THE CINNI-BUN SHOP  🏆
Address: St. Jacob's Farmers Market, St. Jacob's
Sure, the lines are at the apple fritter place, but the real gem are these cinnamon buns served with a variety of glazes (caramel and vanilla glaze are the best) -- one of the best... ever!

MILBREE-VIKING
Address: 350 Davis Dr, Newmarket
I love Finnish cinnamon buns with a hint of cardamom and the ones made by the only Finnish bakery/deli in the extended Toronto area are my favourite.

WEIL'S OF WESTDALE
Address: 981 King St W, Hamilton
While these make not make it to the nationals, they're worthy contenders for the regionals: light fluffy dough with not too overpowering cinnamon and just the right amount of icing.

HURST BAKERY
Address: 15543 Yonge St, Aurora
A unique take from this Aurora bakery involves golden yellow, sweet egg dough rolled in cinnamon and then twisted into a sort of knot. Topped off with drizzled icing. So happy I took half a dozen!

LEINALA'S BAKERY 🏆
Address: 272 Caswell Dr, Sudbury
This guide can't have too many Finnish cinnamon buns -- give them a try and you'll have to try. These golden brown cinnamon twists with rock sugar and that delectable hint of cardamom, mmm....

ROCKET BAKERY
Address: 272 Water St, St. John's
Rocket's cinnamon bun may have been the only cinnamon bun I had on my Newfoundland trip, but it was nonetheless a winner! Delicious drier cinnamon mass in a fluffy dough and icing spooned over it. So good!

BOULANGERIE SAMOS
Address: 4379 Boul. St-Laurent, Montreal
The cinnamon croissants from this Greek bakery have to be the best cinnamon buns in the city. Unique, slightly flaky on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. Yummy!

PATISSERIE MARIE4POCHES
Address: 111 Boulevard Sainte-Anne O, Ste. Anne des Monts
A unique one from this small-town bakery: two cinnamon buns sold together as a loaf. Baked in the box it comes in, these buns are trapped in a delectable mass of butter and sugar. Heavenly.

DANISH HOME BAKERY
Address: 1155 101 St, North Battleford
This small town bakery may not be that Danish, but their fresh cinnamon buns absolutely slathered in amazing cream cheese icing have to be a provincial highlight.

+ many more to come?
