We seem to be on a doughnut roll lately (this is purely accidental and certainly wasn't eaten this way)... actually, this is the final bakery from the Gaspé trip. Yes, all good things must come to an end. :(
Nevertheless, this was one grand finale. Though they make a few other products like bread (resembling soda bread) and some pies and baked goods, Délices d'Antan has one specialty and that specialty is doughnuts. Old-fashioned doughnuts based on an old recipe and in about half a dozen flavours that fly off the shelves. They're not fancy; they don't have crazy glazes; they're not even that big, truth be told. But they have one ingredient that makes them magical: potatoes. Yes, you read correctly; they're made with potatoes. Potato flour to be exact. And that is what gives them their one-of-a-kind moist and dense texture that you would never attribute to the humble potato.
At $5.50 for half dozen and $1.25 each, it's worth your while to get more than just one. There's an even better deal for a dozen. How could I have known I would just want to keep eating them and eating them...? The flavours were: plain, maple syrup, honey, cinnamon sugar, and powdered sugar. If I remember correctly. What I do remember correctly: amazing. One bite and you're hooked. These are so simple and straightforward, and yet so delectable. Probably the honey was my favourite, but all were good in their own right. They may not look like much at first glance, but believe me, if you're anywhere near the area and even if you're not: stop. It's worth it. :)
