Located inside the 400 Market just outside Barrie, Sugar Diva easily falls into the category of 'cupcake shop', which to be quite frank, is something I generally avoid. I am not a cupcake person; I don't believe in cupcakes... this is as nicely as I can write it. XD Yes, it's true that there is more available than just cupcakes, such as cakes and cookies, but with the focus on those kid-friendly little mounds of frosting, I was very skeptical when I was presented with two squares from this bakery, both of which certainly looked appetizing enough. But were they? Yes, that was the question.
The first, a butter square, was a cross between a butter tart and a square. Essentially, a butter tart without the often cumbersome thick shell surrounding the buttery filling. With just the shortbread bottom, this had excellent flavour and texture. A good layer of nuts and butter filling that didn't turn into a great big mess with perhaps the highlight of the entire thing: the thin, rocky crust on top. Rich and chewy.
Despite being more a butter tart fan than a blueberry one, the favourite of the two was the blueberry square. At first I thought it was a date square; the idea was the same: an oat-based dough on top and bottom with a thin layer of fruit filling in between. The blueberries were flavourful and the dough was just right, not too oaty and not too sweet and cake-like either. A delicious treat -- both of them -- that managed to surprise and impress; looks like you can't judge a bakery before trying it. ^^;;
