A bit off the beaten path, Dar's operates from a house somewhere southeast of Guelph and northwest of Milton. Despite its relatively rural location, this bakery gets a lot of traffic from drivers, though it seems the sausage rolls and other savoury goods are most popular. Sadly, the sweets aren't too extensive, with pies, butter tarts, and doughnuts being the main attraction. It may be an embarrassing confession, but I've been in a doughnut mood of late and while searching for the best doughnuts in the Guelph area (even searched province-wide) doesn't get you anything definitive -- this must be rectified by Mimi's Cake Tour! Watch out for it! -- Dar's Delights popped up as a bakery with doughnuts, a good bakery with doughnuts... and away I went~! :)
There are just two varieties of doughnuts at Dar's: cinnamon sugar and plain sugar, all with the same cake doughnut base. While my favourite doughnuts will always be the yeast variety, the key to yummy old-fashioned doughnuts is freshness. And these were definitely fresh upon purchase, with a slight crunch on the outside and soft, sandy inside that almost melts upon contact. Both were tasty, but the cinnamon sugar ones were the better of the two. Perhaps not my favourite doughnut (I will always be a sucker for glaze), but a must on that upcoming 'definitive doughnut guide'. Classic and delicious -- or should I say delighful -- old-fashioned doughnuts!
