On a recent tour of the area, I decided to make the trendy Bang Bang Ice Cream a stop after spotting it in a magazine article of sweet spots to visit throughout Toronto. The "bakery" element intrigued me and subsequently did not live up to expectations. For one, Bang Bang is Ice Cream not Bakery; the simplest thing for them to do is to remove that rather deceiving title of "bakery" from their name. Yes, they make and bake the goodies they use for their ice cream sandwiches, but it's like an ice cream place who made their own waffle cones were to be called "Ice Cream and Waffles". Upon going up to the counter, one is greeted with the sign that baked goods can't be bought individually. When asked what exactly this meant (do you have to buy more than one?? the wording could be clearer), the reply was that baked goods can only be bought in conjunction with the ice cream used to make an ice cream sandwich. They are not sold as-is. Um, now I love ice cream from local makers, don't get me wrong, but... bakery? Where is my bakery?!? >__<
Being then informed that since they had freshly made cinnamon buns, they could sell those on their own, I took two ($4.50 each, without ice cream; ouch!) These looked pretty good; muffin-like in shape with an appetizing, loosely rolled top with a more runny, glaze-like icing. The top was certainly the highlight, but on the whole it, strangely enough, had very little taste. The dough was reminiscent more of regular white bread and while gooey all over, it didn't really taste like cinnamon nor was it very sweet. O.o And call me a cinnamon bun purist, but how does this become an ice cream sandwich? I love ice cream; I love cinnamon buns, but the two together just don't seem to match... a bewildering experience, to say the least.
