Wellington Cakes is a newer cake shop located in downtown Guelph and, as the name indicates, specializes in cakes. Wedding cakes, to be exact. Most of the time, wedding cake bakeries don't have much in terms of a storefront or they might sell some cupcakes. And while this is also partly true of Wellington Cakes, at least that unfortunate part about cupcakes, they do happen to have a little shop that sells a few simple treats including squares, butter tarts and macarons.
I tried a pecan butter tart and a Nanaimo square (both a bit pricey at around $3.50). Both were pretty good. The Nanaimo square tasted higher quality than you usually encounter in a bakery; you could tell that better ingredients and higher grade chocolate had been used. The drizzle of white chocolate was also a nice touch, though it could have benefited from a better slicing job - especially for the fact you were paying more than average for it.
The butter tart was loaded with pecans and the shell was nice and flaky; not too hard and not too soft. It's a bit hard to find that perfect consistency of tart with these thicker shells. I liked the filling, though I would have liked to see a little more it underneath all those nuts.
