If someone hasn't been to Square One in awhile, they may be surprised to find that there's a whole new gourmet food zone inside. Unfortunately, most of it is still franchises or businesses from elsewhere in the city, but it's still rather noteworthy that there are now baked good options in the mall. One of these is burger franchise Reds' side venture: Abbey's Bakehouse. I'm not sure what upscale burgers has to do with a bakery, but hey, I was there to give it a try.

The bakery is its own separate space and consists of shelves running along the glass walls, filled with plates and cake stands of a couple of each baked goods. The bakery does look bigger than it is, since there isn't that much selection, just classic squares, pies and tarts.
One of the more popular items seem to be their butter tart ($3-something). A bit too expensive with too bulky a shell, especially with the tips of the "flower" protruding well into the filling itself, I found it way too sweet. There was too much sugar in every component of it; the taste was alright, but it had no crunch: the butter filling didn't have that delectable baked top (instead it seemed to be glazed in sugar) and the shell was on the soft side. You always want to crack open a butter tart.... not bad for a mall spot... and if you need a sugar high.
