Chunil Bakery is just outside the chocopie madness of Jeonju's hanok village and I think the one thing that stuck with me was this particular bakery's penchant for cream filling. Whether it was icing-laden cakes, eclairs, buns or little pancake-shaped dough rolled round it, Chunil seems to love it cream. And its year-round Christmas decorations. ;) Then again my apartment in Busan was also equipped with a Christmas tree, so maybe late March was still too early to take them down? Still, the doughnut ornaments on the windows do deserve special mention.
Anyways, feeling that I just give some of this cream a try, I took the monster cream log (2500 won). it probably wasn't called that, but this thing was a lot bigger than it looked. Maybe it was the richness of the dense, slightly chewier dough coated in a very fine crumble? Or maybe it was the sheer magnitude of that cream filling, that oozed out from all sides once you took a bite? Not bad in taste, but overwhelming.
Similarly, there was the green tea cream bun (2500 won). I'd already had one before, so I knew what to expect: plenty of flavourful cream, a nice crust. Except here the crust was a bit on the soggy side, as was the bun dough as a whole. Again, I think the problem was that there was simply too much of the cream and it made the inside wetter than it should have been. Because there was a lot of cream. Oof, these guys really didn't know when to stop!
