Yes, there is a bakery in the Westman Islands. I mean, why wouldn't there be? ;) Many sources from a few years back say a bakery of another name was here, which means that this chic bakery is relatively new and trying to be the fancy place in town. Ha ha, well, I suppose there are many bakeries throughout Iceland trying to step things up with their decor, even if their classic selection of baked goods (jumbo cinnamon buns, danishes and kleinur) remains the same. Interior design aside, Stofan has an interesting selection of baked goods spread out in one corner of their long counter; mixing a bit of sweet and savoury, you come to realize there isn't all that much selection, but all the favourites are there.
One of the unique finds at this bakery were the cinnamon buns with pecan (somewhere between 350-400kr, I'm sure), which unlike traditional buns were baked in a tray and topped with a generous amount of icing and a sprinkling of pecan nuts. Ooey, gooey American style cinnamon buns. ;) This was a total mess to eat, with icing sticking to pretty much everything, but it was fresh, smelled amazing, and was so tasty. A little too much icing, perhaps, but what a one-of-a-kind treat!
Next up: the ever so humble kleina (165kr, I believe). The key to these dense cake doughnuts is freshness; you want that thin deep-fried crust on the outside and a soft inside and these nailed that. Personally, I'm not sure if you could be able to compare kleinur and rank them. I've had bad ones because they're stale and good ones because they're fresh; naturally, this was one of the good ones and perhaps I should leave it at that. ^.^
I was overall very pleased with my cake tour of the Westman Islands: two great locations in absolutely stunning surroundings. Not to be missed.
