Along our route through Gaspe, we veered off the main road and decided to take a peek at New Richmond, especially as there was some sort of sign for a historic downtown (if I'm not confused with another town on the southern coast) and a historic downtown most often than not... has a bakery. Well, we didn't see much of a downtown, but there was a bakery. All is well in the world. ;)
La boulangerie du gars du coin is a small bakery situated on the corner of a perfectly unremarkable plaza; much more picturesque indoors than out, this bakery/cafe is cozy and compact, with full stock featured on a set of shelves at the cash. At mid-afternoon, this stock happened to be out-of-stock: the place was emptied out. Baskets that were to hold baked goods had been cleaned out and there was hardly a loaf of bread left. This made things quite difficult for me; in the first place, it is a bread-bakery first. Artisan bread is without a doubt their specialty and any baked goods are dough-oriented, such as croissants, pains au chocolat, etc. Secondly, there was nothing there. But the smile that greeted me upon entering and the thought of a cake tour from New Richmond made me feel bad about walking in and out. So, spotting this little guy, I went for it.
The... well, it's not quite a pain au chocolat... the uniquely-shaped pain au chocolat ($1.75) was the only sweet treat left and so I didn't hesitate to pounce on it. Multi-layered, flaky dough that was tasty and buttery, and the perfect texture. A lack of chocolate besides the little chips on top was a disappointment; it was plain dough and, wanting something more than croissant, I felt like it could have been better.
