Oof, it took me forever to find this bakery's Busan offshoot - why it is the lone location written in Chinese characters and why is it listed as a restaurant? Obviously just to make my life more difficult. Anyways, Samsong is a smaller bakery chain, but a chain nonetheless, that specializes in stuffed buns, mostly with savoury fillings such as corn, meat and potato, and biscotti. A bit of a bizarre combination, but there you go.
In the same style as the savoury buns, there are a few sweet varieties, but the selection is fairly limited to red bean or cream cheese. In the evening, they also had a lot of empty trays, so selection was even more limited; I was even considering walking out. However, with the images of the very serious baker and those Chinese characters, you got the impression you were dealing with something extra special.
I decided to try the cocoa bread (2000 won). This was a chocolate bun (not very sweet) with a nice, cookie-like crust on top and a overly generous dusting of sugar. Inside, it was stuffed with ooey gooey chocolate. It was pretty much a given that it would be stuffed with chocolate, but I still wasn't the biggest fan of the filling. Maybe because it reminded me a bit of those molten lava cakes I don't like? Or the thick gooey filling clashed with the fluffy bun? Not sure. Maybe it just didn't seem like it had been handmade with such earnest gravity, captured in a series of black-and-white photographs? ;)
