They always say not to judge a book by its cover; however, I have to say from experience that you can usually judge a baked good on how it looks like. Take Quesnel Bakery, for example. I walked into this small town, yet unexpectedly busy bakery stocking all the classics: squares, cinnamon buns and a good variety of doughnuts (seems like their specialty, at least it wouldn't be much of a stretch) and just knew that the winner would be their apple fritter - I almost want to say that I can even tell that nothing else for sale can even come close.
Just look at it. In some ways, I can't understand how you can go to Quesnel Bakery and not get the apple fritter ($1.99). It's nice and chunky, so that the golden fried exterior and icing reach down into the cracks and little holes here and there. Fresh, fluffy dough, flavourful chunks of apple. Yup, this one is going straight into the finals - this is national apple fritter competition grade.
