The World Tour has returned! More stops from my beloved Iceland (really, I have to be at 85% of all bakeries in the country -- the Icelandic tourism board should be honouring me for promoting tourism :P) and a bunch of bakeries from Poland and the Czech Republic. Oh yeah! Bakery greatness will be achieved, mwa ha ha!!!
[after several seconds of calming down] While driving through South Iceland, I spotted the sign I always want to see sandwiched between the bank and supermarket: Bakari Konditori. And while this place does not in any way exist online, have an address, nor does it seem to have a name or dedicated store of its own, there is a bakery in Hella, and that alone is a wonderful thing! :) It will certainly make my bakery map of Iceland a little more impressive!
Anyways, the bakery consists a rather small nook upon entering the vestibule of the supermarket. There's little more than a few glass cases, most of which have sandwiches and more lunch-friendly goodies. Sweets are fairly limited and feature your usual selection of cinnamon buns and some danishes, as well as some American classics like (overpriced) cookies and doughnuts. [On a side note, I've seen American-style doughnuts in countless bakeries here and I am so tempted to give one a try. Some look really good...]
Having already bought those famous, gigantic cinnamon buns from another bakery that day and finding the danishes a bit more pricey than generally expected, I went for a "healthier" option that I had not yet seen before (I would see it in one another place, where it actually was properly labelled and priced): the oat "snail" (somewhere around 320-350kr). This was what I would call a cross between the classic Icelandic Hjónabandssæla ("married bliss") square and a cinnamon bun. It looked good for you and tasted like it too; this was somewhat of a muesli bun, chock full of oats, a lightly sweetened whole grain dough with just the right amount of jam. Good, and probably a fantastic choice for fans of muesli and granola bars, it's a nice change from the icing-laden sweets in most Icelandic bakeries... though of course I may prefer a danish. :P
