On the corner of Pandosy and K.L.O. Rd, there's a big "bakery" sign. Upon first glance, I assumed that this sign meant that there was a bakery on the plaza, but it actually belongs to Lakeview Market. There aren't that many independent grocery stores in Kelowna (and "that many" being a big of an exaggeration as it is) and Lakeview Market is one of them. It's one of my favourite places to shop in the city and -- yes -- they do have their own bakery with a fairly extensive selection of baked goodies both behind the counter and at the self-serve area. Among that selection, there are a few types of doughnuts (the apple fritters must be good; they're always sold out!), sweet buns and pastries, pies, cookies, cake slices, muffins and squares, not to mention that everything is so well priced, with items in the self-serve area being $1.50 or less.
On my first visit, I walked by the display area, where their cakes and some treats are located, and was contemplating what to get when I turned the corner and spotted poppy seed buns on the shelf. Yes!! Another poppy seed bun to check out in Kelowna! ^^ This poppy seed bun ($1.35) was a pocket of puff pastry stuffed with a generous mass of slightly ground poppy seeds. On top, a drizzle of icing. This really looked exciting, but biting into it, I thought it too doughy, with the poppy seeds unequally distributed so that sometimes you had a mouthful of poppy seed, other times just dough. And perhaps the airy dough wasn't best suited for something heavy like poppy seeds? Not sure, but it wasn't my favourite. The same could be said for their glazed doughnuts.
Still, for a supermarket to have poppy seed buns -- that was something worth celebrating. :D And at such affordable prices, it's so easy to just pop one (or more) sweet into your shopping cart. I know I do~!
