Given its name you'd think that The Persian Man invented these deep-fried cinnamon buns topped with pink icing or at least is the quintessential destination for them in Thunder Bay, the home of the Persian. However, they're really neither, especially when The Persian Man doesn't even bake them themselves, but gets them from their partner bakery next door. At least this is what I heard... On that first trip, I did have a Persian, though. I wasn't that
impressed, but I thought it was a holiday Monday, I bought it at a deli
and who knows if it was super fresh. They might have not baked their own
for all I know. The worker had thrown two together in one bag and the
icing had all smeared and stuck to the paper, so it was a lot of unlucky
circumstances at once.
This time, I got a blueberry Persian from the "source". Like the first time, the icing got stuck to the bag, resulting in a bit of a mess during reconstruction. The idea of the deep-fried cinnamon bun doughnut is a good concept, but it was this one that really hit the point home: the icing really is not good. It has the texture of fake marshmallow topping and once you realize it, nothing is the same again. Seriously, why go to Thunder Bay for the Persians when you can get Finnish jelly doughnuts?
